How and when did I become interested in art?
I became interested in art at a very young age, growing an affinity for drawing and coloring as early as I was given a crayon! I have fond memories of going over to my grandmother’s house and making crafts and using her different art supplies. I quite early grew interested in drawing people and remembering drawing the people I saw in magazines. Later on in high school I became very interested in colored pencils and photorealism portraits, and received so much local support and some award recognition from the portraits I did of my friends. My creative interests in the past 5 years have evolved more towards expressive realism, painting in oils and enjoying the painterly textures and emotional expression! Intuition has played a great role in this! Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout my creative journey!
Who and what inspires me?
There are many artists and many different forms of art that inspire me. Some visual artists I very much admire are William Adolphe Bouguereau, John William Waterhouse, Jules Bastien-Lepage, George Clausen, John Singer Sargent, Rembrandt, and Leonardo Da Vinci (to name a few). I am also so inspired by many of today’s contemporary realist painters, as well as those who paint about nature and spirituality!
I am also very inspired by music and how rhythm interacts with creativity and art making, as well as how song can be a conduit of expression! I connect very deeply with music and a painting practice I like to do is to paint a musician whose music I feel connected to while listening to their music and embodying the energy they put into it! I am very interested in jazz, world music, soul, and jam! Some of my favorites include Joni Mitchell, Alice Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Jaco Pastorius, Esther Phillips, Chick Corea, Flora Purim, Tania Maria, the Grateful Dead, and so many more!
I am also very inspired by nature and the energy contained and exchanged throughout the natural world. The intuition, the wisdom, the knowing, the reciprocity, the relationships. It’s all so fascinating and contains so much knowledge that we as humans can learn from!
What do I enjoy outside of painting?
Outside of painting, I enjoy learning about herbalism, plant medicine, and indigenous wisdom. I enjoy intentional daily rituals such as journaling, meditation and gratitude giving! I love going on nature walks, spending time with friends, reading, listening to records, going to shows, vintage fashion and thrifting, watching nature and history documentaries and cooking nourishing meals. I also love tea and am getting into gardening!
